Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain – One of the more popular games in the Metal Gear Franchise, Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain is a open world stealth game set in 1984 that revolves around Punished “Venom” Snake, a mercenary that travels to Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption might be the biggest story in the gaming world in the past few years.
The series consists of three games, Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Revolver, and prequel Red Dead Redemption 2.
The latest and perhaps the most successful is Red Dead Redemption 2, which is an open world game that is playable in first person or third person form.
Taking place in the Old American West during the Mexican Revolution, the Red Dead open world is a violent and dangerous one.
These single player games feature a protagonist who’s an outlaw in the final days of the Old American West and has a somewhat linear storyline that involves players visiting fixed locations at first.

Grand Theft Auto V
This popular and controversial game set in the fictional state of San Andreas (designed to resemble Southern California) is centered around three criminals who must commit various heights while also avoiding rival gang members and criminals as well as law enforcement.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is an open world game and players can freely roam the countryside of San Andreas along with the fictional city of Los Santos, which is loosely based on Los Angeles.
Most of the missions or quests in Grand Theft Auto 5 revolve around driving and shooting game play, and there is a “Wanted” system that gauges the aggression of law enforcement based on your actions in the game.

Just Cause Franchise
The Just Cause series of open world games are action-adventure third person shooter and driving games.
It starts with the protagonist, a spy named Rico Rodriguez, being dropped onto a Caribbean island after being called there to help fight a guerrilla group that is believed to possess weapons of mass destruction.
Players in theJ ust Cause universe have an expansive open world to explore and the ability to take possession of various vehicles including boats, cars, fixed wing planes, helicopters, and motorcycles.
This adrenaline rush fueled game also allows players to skydive, parasail, base-jump, and perform other stunts as they progress through the game.
Side mission options include taking over neighborhoods controlled by drug cartels and more; but side quests and other activities can draw attention from the Big Bad that is the guerrilla group and may prove fatal.

The Long Dark
A first person survival game that gives players the role of a Canadian bush pilot who crash landed in the wilderness after a geomagnetic regional storm.
It is a survival simulation open world game in which players must account for elements like body temperature, fatigue, caloric intake, wind-chill, danger from wildlife, and other environmental factors.
The objective is to survive as long as possible while utilizing all the resources they can find.
The Long Dark offers Story Mode and Survival Mode and various levels of difficulty ranging from Pilgrim (the easiest) and Voyageur (the toughest), and Players have the option to be dropped in one of six regions – Mystery Lake, Coastal Highway, Pleasant Valley, Forlorn Muskeg, Desolation Point, and Timberworld Mountain, all of which are connected through various transition points.
There are four other regions in the game – Mountain Town, Broken Railroad, Hushed River Valley, and Bleak Inlet.
Shaun McGinnis from Gamespot was quoted as saying that The Long Dark is “one of the few games in this genre focused on capturing the solitary wonder of fighting to staying alive in the brutal wilderness.”

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon
This is a series of tactical shooter games that put players in command of a newly created fictional squad of U.S. Army Special Forces from the Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group which is stationed at Fort Bragg.
This squad is referred to as Ghosts and they are similar to real world Special Ops and their operations are highly classified.
There are multiple games and spinoffs in this series based on author Tom Clancy’s novels.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
This Lego-themed action adventure game features various Marvel universe super heroes teaming up to defeat the likes of Loki and Dr. Doom who recruit other villains to join them in taking over the planet with the Doom Ray of Doom.
Players can choose to control 180 characters from across the Marvel universe and Marvel creator Stan Lee also makes a cameo in the game for some side quests.
The best selling Lego game of all time as of this writing (and maybe one of the best open world xbox one games?), there are collections of Lego mini-figures based on the characters in the game as well.

Agents of Mayhem
This open world action adventure game is set in a futuristic version of Seoul and it is based around twelve agents with varying backgrounds who have to complete missions and explore a world that’s reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons (there’s also an expansion pack that includes three additional agents).
Players pick three agents to play as from a third-party perspective with the goal of stopping L.E.G.I.O.N., an evil group bent on destroying the world, while M.A.Y.H.E.M. are the good guys.

The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild
The Zelda games are basically an institution in the gaming realm, and for good reason.
One of the most beloved game series around, the Legend of Zelda franchise games all center around various iterations of a young man referred to as Link who is the bearer of the TriForce of Courage.
The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – was released in March 2017 and involves exploring the kingdom of Hyrule as Link. Link’s goal is to defeat Ganon using the help of the Master Sword, the four Divine Beasts, and Zelda’s Bow of Light along with help from the Hyrulean races and their champions.
If Link fulfills certain conditions – freeing the four Divine Beasts, retrieving the Master Sword, and finding all the memories – players can unlock a secret ending.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The latest iteration of the popular Animal Crossing series has been the surprise breakout hit of spring 2020, and for good reason.
It’s relatively easy to play, approved for all ages, and it has a cuteness or lightness to it that are perfect for these times.
This open-ended social simulation game is produced by Nintendo, distributed worldwide, and rated E for everyone.
Unlike most other games, there is really no “winning” at Animal Crossing in the traditional sense, but rather you can gain experience by socializing with the villagers and making friends, customizing your character and island, and planting and harvesting plants and other food.
The game operates in real time using your console’s internal clock and calendar, so things such as plants growing, whether it is night or day, and other activities reflect your current location and status.
Moreover, there are in-game events like holidays, special launches, and more that happen on specific real world dates.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduced several new characters to the series’ consistent cast of characters, along with other fun elements. Players can join houses with other players or play solo.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered
An open world game played from the first person perspective, this action-adventure game is set in a fictionalized version of the real world – in that some of the historical events and characters are real, but then the game takes it from there.
Assassin’s Creed 3: Remastered is centered around the ancient struggle between the Knights Templar and the Assassins.
Series regular Desmond Miles reappears in this game with a new weapon – a machine called Animus – and while the framing story is relatively modern and focused around preventing the 2012 apocalypse, players time travel to the 18th century during the American Revolution and play as Desmond’s ancestor Ratonhnhaké:ton a.k.a. Connor.
While the original Assassin’s Creed III game was released to mostly positive reviews, although there was criticism of unevenly developed mechanics and some technical glitches.
Assassin’s Creed 3: Remastered includes updates to the gameplay, enhanced visuals and lighting, new character models, and updates to the game’s mechanics.

Saints Row Franchise

A survival game that follows a scientist named Wilson who finds himself lost in a creepy dark world where he must survive as long as possible.
The goal for the player is keep Wilson fed, healthy, and mentally stable while he battles a variety of supernatural and natural enemies.
To make things more difficult, players can choose Adventure mode and pit Wilson against antagonist Maxwell.
Don’t Starve was praised upon release for its original artwork, music, and overall style including the variety of ways that Wilson can perish; that said, it was criticized for its complexity, difficulty, and the implementation of permanent death.

The incredibly popular Fortnite game has three different modes that are all built on the same game engine.
There’s Fortnite: Save The World, which is a shooter survival game for up to four players at a time that involves building fortifications and fighting off various zombie creatures, Fortnite: Battle Royale, a free to play game where up to 100 players at a time fight it out in the ultimate battle for survival, and Fortnite: Creative, which is an open world sandbox game where players can create their own worlds including battle arenas.
Fortnight players can also personalize their experience with character models or skins along with the game’s Battle Pass through V-Bucks, which can be purchased with real world currency or earned by completing various missions, battles, and quests.
The Fortnite Battle is a tiered customization program that lets players earn extra rewards by completing various tasks and objectives.
While all three versions of Fortnite have been successful, Fortnight: Battle Royale has been by far the most commercially successful.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
The seventh title in the popular but controversial Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is similar to the other games in the series in that involves real world elements like criminal activity, weapons, car chases, gangs, law enforcement, and more set in the fictional state of San Andreas, which is based on southern California and Nevada in the 1990s and includes similar events and landmarks.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas brought some new elements to the now-classic series, including RPG style mechanics, the ability to customize your persona’s clothing and vehicles, a variety of mini-games or activities that players can unlock, gambling games, and even a hidden sexual scene that players can unlock via the “Hot Coffee mod”.

Sky Children Of The Light relies heavily on social mechanics and making friends in the game – players can chat with each other, exchange gifts, and collect a wide variety of cosmetic items like hairstyles, masks, playable musical instruments, different facial expressions, and more via the in-game currency.

Red Faction Franchise
Sharing an open universe with the Saints Row series, these three shooter games take place in 2075 after the human race has fled to Mars.
This game won praise from critics for its extended play time and tough enemies that “make the game worth playing through more than once” according to GameSpy.
Years later, gamers are still waiting for a sequel.
This open world action adventure game is played from a first person perspective and centers around the story of four vault hunters who travel to a mythical planet called Pandora to track down a vault supposedly filled with alien technology before a private corporation gets their hands on it while they evade local wildlife and assorted bandits.

World War Z
Based on the 2006 book of the same name, World War Z has mixed reviews as one of best open world zombie survival games that focuses on survivors of a zombie apocalypse that hit many locations – Moscow, New York, Jerusalem, Sydney, Oslo, Barcelona, Denver, Cairo, Seoul, Budapest, Auckland, Buenos Aires, Manilla, Paris, Berlin, New York, Johannesburg, Warsaw, Marseille, and Tokyo.
World War Z players can choose from six classes that each have specialized skill sets, such as the Gunslinger who is talented shooter, the Hellraiser who’s a master of explosives, the Fixer, the Medic, the Slasher who uses mêlée weapons, and the Exterminator who handles crowd control.
New perks and weapons are unlocked through progress in this complex multiplayer game where up to 1,000 enemies can appear at once. There are five modes – Player vs. Player vs. Zombie, Swarm Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Swarm Domination.
The only goal of World War Z?
Survive the zombies and save the city that you’re in.
This game was released to mixed reviews, but Game Informer praised its shooting mechanics, visuals, and overall story.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity
The eighth release in the Assassin’s Creed series, this version of Assassin’s Creed follows the ages-old fight between the Templars and the Assassins, this time during the French Revolution.
Set in Paris, single players become Amo Victor Dorian and attempt to expose the true powers behind the Revolution.
Assassin’s Creed: Unity maintains the same third person open world exploration style as the other games under the Assassin’s Creed umbrella.
It features updated combat and stealth mechanics, including parkour.
While this game was praised for its visuals, critics took issue with the relative lack of innovation as compared to other Assassin’s Creed releases.

A free to play multiplayer battle royale game, Apex Legends involves up to twenty squads of three players landing on an island with the goal of becoming Apex Champions, or the last squad standing.

There is a nonverbal “ping” system that allows squads to communicate with each other, discuss strategy, coordinate attacks, and more.
Players can be revived or respawned by their squadmates if they get knocked down during fights.

League of Angels – Heaven’s Fury
This is a 3D role playing game that takes place in a realm loosely based on Western mythology, except that the gods have fallen to corruption.

An action-adventure game played from the third person perspective, in Maneater players take on the role of a female bull shark who must explore and evolve in an open underwater world so she can get revenge on Scaly Pete, a shark hunter who disfigured her as pip and killed her mother.
She lives in Port Clovis, which encompasses seven regions that can be explored open world style.
Maneater starts with our protagonist as a baby, and she grows up along the way, gathering weapons like swordfish spears.
She also needs to make sure she’s well fed with a balance of nutrients from various types of fish, turtles, and other aquatic life.
Players can explore underwater grottos, attack humans along the coasts, on yachts, boats, and jet-skis, and otherwise take on side quests in search of the ultimate conquest: revenge on the hunter who destroyed her life and made her a maneater to begin with.

The video game version of the popular tabletop game Cyber Punk 2020, this highly anticipated game is scheduled to be released in September 2020.
It takes place in the dystopian Night City, an open world composed of six regions.
Players take on the role of V from a first person perspective, a mercenary with customizable weapons and the ability to acquire more, along with hacking skills, opportunities for various types of combat, and other features.
There will be both lethal and non-lethal play-through modes in the upcoming Cyber Punk 2077.
Game of the generation?
Dying Light 2
A massive multiplayer open world zombie apocalypse survival game designed to evoke a sense of horror and dread, the second game in the Dying Light franchise.
It features a new protagonist – Aiden Caldwell – who has a range of parkour skills such as wall running and sliding, leaping from edges, and more.
Both short range or melee weapons are available, along with long range options; that said, the game is primarily focused on melee combat.
