The Southsea district is a large and varied one, covering most of the southernmost portion of Tariana. Here, there are traditional Tarian mining towns, as well as towns within the forest and along the coast, and farming communities. The land of the Southsea district is rich in timber and grain, as well as valuable minerals.
Towns and Cities
"Nysses" -The folk of Nysess have been known throughout the southern lands for their idiosyncrasies. For instance, though most of the Tarians honor Vrol and Sarith as the two most important gods, the folk of Nysess place Sulinea before both, and claim that Sulinea formed the seas before any harnessing of light or land by Sarith and Seres. The folk of Nysess place Vrol second among the pantheon, of course, since mining is an important occupation in this isolated valley. Buildings in Nysess are constructed mainly of stone, both uncut and quarried.
Though outwardly the Temple of Sarith conforms to Tarian standards for religious observation, many observers have noted that this temple, constructed of gleaming white marble quarried not too far away, tends more toward worship of Sulinea. Holy days of the other gods are dutifully observed, but one day a week is dedicated to praise of Sulinea. Statues of the gods worked in fine metals line the sides of the temple (inside). That of Sulinea is of gold, and marginally larger than the rest. The statue of Vrol, also of gold, commonly has mounds of gems and chunks of metal around it, placed as offering.
"Dranal" -Located near the mountain mining camps of the Mountains of Gloom, and on the River Talin, Dranal is an important processing area for mineral wealth. Dranal was a mythical hero, said to have slain the great beast Narkinthal. The Statue of Endeavor stands prominantly in town. It was built to commemorate the heroic works of miners who saved seven townspeople trapped in a landslide east of town. The statue combines the mythic acts of Dranal, who killed the dreaded mountain beast Narkinthal (reputed to be a dragon, but more popularly believed by scholars to be a large cat) with those of the miners. The large bronze depicts Dranal against the beast, and behind him, miners digging out people reaching to them.
