General description : By using actions related to sailing the characters will be able to sail all the available ships in Adellion.
A ship requires at least two characters to travel properly. One character can make the ship run but it will only travel straight forward because there is no one there to steer it.
In addition there could be (at least) a third character as a navigator (stars/mapmaking).
Actions : I. Steer
II. Raise/drop anchor
III. Hoist/lower sails
IV. Row
I. Steer
To be able to steer a ship the character has to be standing on a ship (that is in water), that has its anchor raised and is moving.
The character who wants to steer has to be standing within 2m of the rudder and then choose to use the action from the skill panel.
Only one character can be steering a ship at the same time.
If the ship is not steered by anyone it will travel straight forward.
Note : The action can also be initiated by r-clicking the rudder and choosing the "steer" command.
II. Raise/drop anchor
To be able to raise/drop an anchor the character has to be standing on a ship (that is in water) and choose to use the action from the skill panel.
Any character on the same ship can raise/drop the anchor.
If the ship is moving when the anchor is dropped the action will bring the ship to a halt.
As long as the anchor remains dropped the ship will not move.
Note : The action can also be initiated by r-clicking the anchor and choosing the "raise/drop anchor" command.
III. Hoist/lower sails
To be able to hoist/lower sails the character has to be standing within 2m of the mast (or one of the masts) and then choose to use the action from the skill panel.
By hoisting/lowering the sails the characters will be able to affect the speed of the boat.
There are six different boat types, each have different speeds and types of sails.
Note : The action can also be initiated by r-clicking the mast and choosing the "hoist/lower sails" command.
The time to raise and lower the sails is reduced as a player becomes more experienced at sailing. Additional people who are using the same command can speed up raising and lowering sails : making crews valuable.
IV. Row
To be able to row the winds need to be still (calm seas).
The character has to be standing within 2m of an oar and then choose to use the action from the skill panel.
For the ship to start moving oars have to be manned on both sides of the ship (i.e. at least two characters have to be using the rowing action).
The rowing will continue as long as the characters remain stationary (within 2m of the oars).
