Salandorf was founded in 2828 TS by Admiral Lord Salan. At first it was a crude settlement of log and mud huts, surrounded by a palisade. However, with the Peace of Limarr in 2829 and the exploration of the interior of the continent, there was time for more advanced construction. Thus it was that in 2848 Henre II determined he would build a capital to demonstrate Salan prowess.
The main work that resulted from his initiative was Sala's Keep. This fortress was the first stone built structure on Ariyure, the natives being entirely ignorant of architectural principles. It was eleven years in the making, Henre II dying shortly after its completion. Since that time kings and councilmen have enlarged and embellished it to the fine example of Salan building that it is today. Of particular interest is the banqueting hall with its panelled wall and banners. The hall is used for formal state occasions and receptions. The Castle also serves as the Salandorf prison and is the headquarters of the Third Regiment.
Salandorf Cathedral is not the original work. That was destroyed in a fire in 3000TS. Unfortunately very little survives of the ancient structure, though fortunately Edohein's tomb remained unharmed. The 'New' Cathedral of Light was built to the more austere doctrines that now prevail. Gone are the ornate altars and coloured glass widows of earlier times. Now all is pure and transparent, that Adell's Light may shine on all within and that from His Light no one may hide.
The Council Chamber is again relatively new. Construction started in 3065 and took some five years. Its luxurious appointments were the cause of the revolts against the 'Chamber Tax' and led directly to the publication of Conre Aiollen's tract, 'The Corrupted Chamber.' When Conre became First Councillor one of his first orders was for the gold and silver furnishings to be sold, the proceeds being used for the new Bath House. Since his time Councillors seem once more to have voted themselves sums to improve the building. The relining of the of the chairs in the chamber with fine silk is a source of current controversy. It is to be hoped that Sir Malcym Crydee learns the lessons of the past.
Next to the Council Chamber and part of the same building is the Hall of Judgment. The Hall is where most trials take place; although there are some smaller courtrooms to one side for less important cases. State trials are presided over by the First Councillor, other cases may be heard by the Justiciars of the Stellstrad - Sala's High Court.
The Guildhall is the home of the City's many guilds. It is where apprentices have their ceremonies of induction into their crafts, where guild dues are paid and where guild celebrations are held. By a tradition, whose origins are long forgotten, the feast of the Festival of Light Ascendant is held here on 3rd Sevilac in each year.
The University of Salandorf is the centre of learning of the Salan state, indeed many agree, of the whole continent. Here is situated the Grand Library where scholars are free to research amongst the numerous scrolls and tomes available. In the lecture halls one can hear distinguished academics like Dr Galad discourse on history, religion, logic and the other disciplines so essential for a good education.
The Theatre of Tragedy and Comedy, known to locals as Vorin's after its first player-manager, is often busy. Whether it is a new play being performed on the open stage, or a traditional rendition of Holmar's enchanting ballet, 'The Fire Dancer's Lament,' or even an auction of goods, entertainment is guaranteed.
