  The City of Verem

The grand city of Verem is a magnificent sight indeed. Large sandstone buildings built into a great oasis. The city itself situated inside of a large canyon with tiny streams coming down the cliff edges from melting snow atop the mountains the canyon is built into. The canyon entrance is heavily guarded and large walled gate made of imported stone bars entrance to the canyon city. The great stone wall was built after the Great War, when the Surric believed the threat of a new war would soon ensue.

In order to protect Verem, which is almost as large as Sakril and very close to the outer borders of the empire, he ordered the wall to be built and a fortification built nearby to protect outlaying cities as well. Despite this great monument, the great city remains a city drenched in religious fervor and high culture. The city of Verem is also home of the Splendid Erith Tieran (Forbidden Palace) in which was built as both a monument from the Veremites to their God-King Surric and a secondary seat of power in case siege should ever come to the great capital city.

City Life

Every bit of life for the Veremites is related to religion and art in one way or another. The city itself is made of many of the finest goods one could import to such a city within the desert. The great wall between the canyon walls, the Erith Tieran, and even the temples have either imported materials used in their creation or arts from far away artists within them. Beautiful murals decorate many building walls and the town center is often filled with vibrant displays of arts, music, dancing, and song.

The people of Verem seem to be as vibrant and colorful as the city itself. The atmosphere in Verem is often considered to be in direct contrast to the harsh, strict, business attitude of those that live in the capital city. The rich here often wear beautiful clothing with bright, vibrant colors and those who couldn’t afford such clothes probably couldn’t afford to live in such a splendid place permanently. Thievery and similar crimes are a constant problem amongst the Byzn or ’elite’ rich upper class of the Sakoian empire, and in Verem dealt with quicker and easier than any other village or city save for the capital itself.

Verem’s population consists mostly of Religious caste members and trainees, whom choose to study here as opposed to the capital city of Sakril. Other castes have sway in the politics of Verem but few have quite as much faith from the people as those whom speak the voice of Edalirin.

Geography and Climate

The City of Verem is located within a large, open canyon called the Muar Le Quei. The Muar Le Quei is a name given to the canyon in ancient times, but the true translation has been all but lost ever since. The most widely accepted translation dubs the great canyon the “Path of Sa”. The great rocky walls are lined with green vines that grow sparsely up their ledges, and small streams of water from the melting snow in the mountain above runs down all flowing into a single stream that runs straight up the canyon and into an oasis in which it flows slowly into a small lake there. The lake is said to slowly empty into an underground water reserve that flows deep under the mountain but it is uncertain if these rumors are true or not.

Myth and rumor aside, Verem stands to be the most artistic and beautiful city in all of the Sakoian empire. While not as prosperous or well populated as the capital, it is indeed a wondrous sight and one many travelers have come far to see. The dry, arid weather of other areas of the desert within the great mountains rain shadow don’t seem to apply here. The moist atmosphere of the city coupled with its location near the thick oasis that the mountain streams flow into make it an overall pleasant place to live, should you be able to afford it.
