  Interview

In current MMORPGs, or in the ones to come, the role of a thief is very restricted, even non-existent! We strongly disapprove this situation, because forgetting the dark world of thieves is forgetting an important part of what was the daily life in a real medieval city. We hope that Adellion will officially establish a whole range of possibilities for mean and devious people who love to lurk in the shadows. For other things, we sure use the way of roleplay to achieve our goals, but please, please do not make Adellion a bright and clean universe, let us enjoy debauchery and lust, let us accomplish every dirty deed that dwells in our twisted brains.

Obscurantis : What is your vision of thieves in Adellion?

John Bates : Thieves are fine. They are part of a society. But if you want to RP a thief as in a realistic environment you have to accept the consequences if you are caught.

Obscurantis : What will be the special skills for thieves?

John Bates : Disguise, Pickpocketing, lockpicking and sneaking are skills for thieves … tracking is a skill for guards.

Obscurantis : From the FAQ, it will be possible to knock someone out and to chain him. Will thieves and other disrespectable characters be able to use a special place, a cave for instance, to hide their preys and ask for a ransom?

John Bates : It’s unlikely we’ll code such hideouts. But in a narrative RPG you could hide your victim in a building you own or take him/her out to the wilds.

Obscurantis : Black Market - Are there be goods that are prohibited in specific cities?

John Bates : This will be up to Clan Leaders or even Town Leaders. There won’t be anything coded but smuggling may be lucrative, depending on the local economy.

Obscurantis : Can we threaten NPCs to get their money if nobody shows to help them?

John Bates : No .. NPC input in the game is limited.

Obscurantis : Disguises - Will thieves use disguises more easily? How will the system show in the game?

John Bates : There will be a disguise skill. At the moment the full details have not been finalised.

Obscurantis : Pickpockets - Can we steal someone's property unnoticed?

John Bates : If you’re good enough, yes. If you haven’t practiced enough it’s the whippin post for you!

Obscurantis : Burglaries - What is the range of possibility in this all-time classic crime?

John Bates : You’d have to be good at lockpicking. Jumping through the window of a house is unlikely. Assume all windows are too tough.

Obscurantis : Dedicated NPCs - Can there be NPCs that are dedicated to thieves and other criminals (prostitutes, pickpockets, beggars, henchmen...)

John Bates : No .. as I said NPC input is low in this game. We want players to roleplay. But in some cities there may be what in England in the 18th century were known as ‘Rookeries’ - places where the poor and outlaws lived.

Obscurantis : A final word to reassure all criminals waiting for Adellion?

John Bates : There will be opportunities for crime and the development of an underworld. But equally if you are caught, you are going to have to accept the consequences of your actions. With perma-death only three strikes away thieves are going to have to be careful. But that should make the whole thing more of a challenge.
