To understand the Drulons as they are today we must begin in the past. The origins of their civilization are a little unclear. Several notable sages have suggested that refugees from another society discovered an ancient ruin of lost temple in the middle of the swamp and founded a new society at that location. It has also been noted that the people of the swamp have enough physical differences that they must have existed there for a much longer period of time and are probably native to the region. It is the theory of this humble sage that a combination of both is probably closer to the truth. We know from the ruins that some ancient civilization existed in the swamp several thousands of years ago. More than likely the Great Sundering destroyed it, leaving only a primitive shell of humanity in its wake. According to the Drulon calendar, the city of Waerrn was founded at the site of the ancient temple over a thousand years ago. It seems that the founders must have been from another region as they revitalized the civilization almost overnight. The resident clans of the swamp merged with this new culture as a working class. It is unknown if the clans came willingly or were subjugated through force for the modern society exists in a homogenous state and few written materials from the time still exist.
The founding of Waerrn at the site of the ancient temple has great significance and resulted in not only their modern religion but also in many of the wars with Sala. The original settlers discovered great stone carvings and artifacts in the temple of enormous importance. If the estimates are correct they may date back to the origins of time itself and were certainly antique even in the days before the Sundering. Within these carvings they discovered the essence of their god Choath and the stories of creation. Of particular importance is the story that tells of the uprising of a new cult that worshiped a heretic and false god. According to the carvings the followings of this new god are small but they spread heretical thoughts and were exiled from the great swamp. Thus when Salanians later arrived in the swamp with their teachings of Adell, Drulons knew that if these carvings were true then it would mean that the Drulon religion is the elder and more likely the true religion. Not only that, but it lends credibility to the claim that all human life started in the Rietroum itself. Drulons count their time after the estimated discovery of these carvings, which is properly labeled "the Revelations". Thus the abbreviation PR stands for "Post Revelations"
When missionaries and diplomats from Sala began to enter the swamp. At first the Drulon people welcomed their neighbors and invited them into their homes to have discussions on the world and religion. The Salanian representatives saw it as an opportunity to educate the savage swamp dwellers while the Drulons saw it as an opportunity to correct the misconceptions of Addellic priests and hopefully enlighten them of the true path. Eventually the Salanian priests and emissaries were shown to the great temple and the sacred writings. The priests of Choath had hoped that this would convince the foreigners of their error but instead they accused the Drulons of forging the carvings and committing heresy. After such accusations the missionaries were no longer welcome and were sent back to their homeland. Soon the villages on the fringes of the swamp began demanding the right to convert to the Adell religion through the persuasions of priests still visiting the area. Suva-Tovari Ytthic saw this as open rebellion against the government and sent military forces into the region along with inquisitors to determine just how far the corruption had proceeded. Two villages were razed (Semby and Ferrig) and several dozen people from surrounding areas were put to death.
Several of the remaining villages outside the swamp declared independence from Drul and had the military backing of Sala to protect them. After several years of failed negotiations, Suva-Tovari Gadri II declared a War of Purification. The war was short and brutal resulting in several more burned villages and towns including one in Sala. All Salanians were either put to death or fled from the lands surrounding the great swamp. Gadri began erecting fortified outposts along the kingdom borders and instructed that all Salanians were to be killed on site. Due to severe losses and other political concerns the Salanian king decided not to pursue the war at that time.
The King of Sala and the high priests of Adell declared a crusade against the false writings, which was later considered to be a large part of the War of 9 Kings. The holy crusade lasted over thirty years with great losses on both sides. The Drulon warriors were fierce but in the end were not able to stand up to the well-trained and equipped Salanian army. They fled back to the borders of the swamp where terrain became the deciding factor and guerilla warfare took over. The Sala cavalry and war machines were unable to traverse the treacherous wetlands and were forced to retreat as supply trains and support groups were destroyed one after another. Once again the borders of the swamp became the castle walls protecting Drul from the invaders and enforced another stretch of uneasy peace.
Wars ravaged the inner lands as different kings took up the sword and banner against one another. The Drul remained silent in their swamp during much of this time as a plague swept through and decimated a large percentage of the swamp's population. Word of the weakness must have reached the Salanians as they declared a second Crusade to take Waerrn. Due to the weakened state, the Salanian forces were able to drive the defenders all the way back to Waerrn where the remaining Drulon had locked themselves behind the great walls. Unable to bring along siege equipment, the Salanian army set up blockades in hopes of starving out the Drulons. Victory certainly seemed to be on the invading army's side and it was only a matter of time. The siege lasted over three months but unfortunately, the plague and sickness that had swept through the great swamp was still lurking and the invaders were decimated almost overnight as bad sanitary conditions and the disease caused untold deaths. Many of the soldiers started mumbling about being cursed by the gods and morale failed causing the generals to retreat back to the solid ground of their homeland. During the siege Drulon herbalists had discovered a cure for the plague in the mold that was growing on some of the stored roots. Such roots would have been thrown away had it not been for the siege and to this day it is used as an example of how Choath works his will to the good of his people even if things seem at their worst.
With a cure for the plague the Drulons set about rebuilding the destroyed towns and villages that were sacked in the second crusade. Over the next couple decades harvests were meager and the population grew very slow. A border city, Aria, was betrayed by Salanian agents who opened the gates in the middle of the night. A small concealed army massacred the citizens killing every man, woman and child in the city and burning much of it to the ground. The Salanians declared that this was a punishment for the sickness and curses placed on them during the last war. The current Suva, Namik, gathered up the largest war host possible and invaded Sala seeking his revenge. He managed to catch and destroy the attackers and burned several Salanian towns to the ground as just payment for the unprovoked attack. As he left for home he sent messengers to the government of Sala declaring that from this point forth any Drulon harmed would result in 3 Salanians killed, and each Drulon settlement that was attacked would result in 3 Salanian towns that would be destroyed. He also re-instituted Gadri's Law stating that the Reitroum was forbidden ground to Salanians and worshipers of Adell. Any violators were to be put to death immediately. Other than small border skirmishes there has been little or no contact between the two kingdoms since that time. The kings of Sala have found the swamp to be too inhospitable to waging a proper war and seem to have turned their sites elsewhere for now.
In the spoils of these conflicts, Drulons began to think upon and evolve the technologies that over time had been received or stolen from Salarians. The idea of iron-alloy allows for great progress in metallurgy. The plague itself advanced the works in medicine and diseases. The siege equipment and weaponry of Salanians foster whole new lines of research. Many consumer goods are improved, door hinges, boats, fishing line, locks, waterproofing.
With Waerrn in ruins and half the swamp in chaos the Vod clan (who secretly withheld troops during the Sala invasion) steps forward to seize control of Rietroum. The Vod council proclaims Sten-Vod as the capital city and sends their guards out into the swamps to enforce martial law. The population has little choice but to concede, and live in repression. The remaining Tovari escape into wilderness to avoid persecution. The current Suva, Namik, still alive and well, bides his time and plots for a return to power. Suva names his base "Kor-Vod", and anyone who wandered near it was killed on sight. In the common Rietroum the Kor-Vod area was thought to contain evil spirits and devils because no one ever returned, and so people stayed away.
The Vod raise taxes to an all time high, Close Waerrn temple to the public, and make practice of publicly torturing citizens who protest the government’s actions. A common form of punishment is to shackle a prisoner upside down then sever the appendages and leave the person for dead.
Five generations the Tovari planned and trained. Namik passes away, never seeing his Tovari return to power. Namik’s Son Kalakar took up his father’s crusade. Kalakar’s life comes and goes, then Balamas, then Crim become Sompa. When Crim passed, his only son Nalor took up his father’s goals with a zest his father never had. Twenty five years after Crim’s death, in the cold evening of a grand Vod council banquet in 1123 PR, the Sompa went into action. There was only a dozen of them, but by the end of the evening all 20 Vod council members were slain, and a third of the personal guards were dead or hostage with the rest in complete confusion. The era of Vod’s rule by fear is over. Drums in the distance pounded out a sacred Choath song heard all over the Rietroum; all 123 living Tovari, lead by Nalor, marched single file into Waerrn that very night and set up an undisputed rule with Waerrn as capital once again. Since this time Vod clan has not been looked so kindly on by the rest of Rietroum. Legally they are equal, but merchants tend to give them higher prices and Tovari will, unofficially, attend others before aiding a Vod. This in turn fuels Vod’s aggression even more.
Suva-Tovari Nalor took the High Priesthood on a warm summer evening in 1124 PR (3194 TS). During his ceremonial walk up to the sun throne to take up the scepter and mantle of Suva, bright eerie lights were seen in the northern skies. The people took this as a sign of the true holiness of Nalor as Choath's chosen one. He has since spoken the words of Choath on a regular basis and promises great things to come for his people. Suva Nalor begins discussions with surrounding kingdoms, opens up trade routes, and invites new guilds and clans to settle in the swamp. Most importantly he re-opens the ancient temple to the populace for prayer and study, even inviting outsiders to come and hear the most holy words of Choath. Vod clan suffers several protests and regular riots, but their power of influence and sympathy is long gone and most of Rietroum pays little mind to these outbursts. Little is done to contain Vod hostility as the clan is so isolated, and contains no functioning governing power.
