  History

Yen Taell (Fortune's Coast) is populated by Aethans today, but that was not always the case, though any history relating to other inhabitants of the island is largely unknown. It was in fact only a few decades ago, in 600 AA (3172 TS) that the first Aethans set foot on Aryiure and Yen Taell. It was the crew captained by the explorer Garbus Teralk, who by chance happened upon the island while exploring new waters, far West of the Paleyans. After surveying Aryiure's coastline Captain Teralk's crew landed on the small scarcely populated island, which later became known as Yen Taell. From there they made a few expeditions to Aryiure itself and traded with the local population and became slightly familiar with their culture. Captain Teralk was excited about the discovery and wanted to stay long, but when Capilis supplies began to run dry his crew became unmanageable and they decided to head home. As they left they brought with them the little population Yen Taell had at the time, in order to sell them off as slaves in the Paleyans.

Thus what later would become known, as Yen Taell remained uninhabited for three years. During this period Aethans had become infamous in Aryiure, as several pirate crews from Grinorea Hin assembled to pillage and plunder Aryiure. Pirates such as Gekare Blindeye, won his fame through being one of the first to plunder Aryiure's coastline.

It was not until 603 AA (3175 TS), that Garbus Teralk returned to Aryiure and this time with a few more resources to allow him a longer stay. He and those who came with him once again landed on Yen Taell and built a small settlement from which various expeditions could be made. This way they learnt of the cultures of Aryiure and were surprised by their diversity.

Kelm Selder, one of Teralk's crew, was the first to attempt Capilis growth on the island. He found that this was possible even though it didn't grow as well as in the Paleyans. Once news of this spread in the Paleyans more interest in the area was received from many directions. Intuitively many knew that this was a requirement for the establishment of a colony so far away.

Garbus Teralk would make many journeys between the Paleyans and Aryiure and eventually learnt to speak both Taril and Ellkana'to, but Aryiure's natives never learnt to trust him as more and more pirates from Grinorea Hin came to plunder and pillage Aryiure. Many of Aryiure's cultures began to assemble small fleets in order to have some level of defence against Aethan pirates. Garbus was supportive of the constructions of these fleets, as he wanted peace in the region. But in 606 AA (3178 TS) Garbus Teralk was murdered by pirates who felt he was an obstacle that needed to be eliminated and his settlement quickly turned into a pirate outpost.

After Garbus Teralk's death little interest among the Aethans near Aryiure, to trade and learn of the other cultures that inhabit the region, remain and most interaction is hostile. Further Captain Teralk's death demoralised many Aethans who planned to visit Aryiure and instead more outcasts from Grinorea Hin arrive in order to try and start a life far away from the Paleyans. Few explorers from Pahina Hin find it to be an attractive environment anymore. But most of the new arrivals were people who had a hard time to fit in on Grinorea Hin's violent environment and were not really interested in piracy.

In 607 AA (3179 TS) Yen Taell (Fortune's Coast) receives its name. None or few of the Aethans who originally came to Aryiure remain at this point. And thus the name must have been given by the recent arrivals from Grinorea Hin. The name refers to the small island and the surrounding waters just Southeast of Aryiure.

As time goes on more and more people arrive, though many of them are still people from Grinorea Hin, the shipping company Medana has been transporting lower-class people from Pahina and Pelfer Hin who want to try and start over because they don't feel comfortable at home. Though Medana has seemed uninterested in making a serious trade effort with Aryiure the tickets to the new-found land that some will pay all they have for, is enough to make the journeys profitable. Commonly one ship would arrive each year, steadily increasing the population in Yen Taell and the settlement eventually grows enough to be called a town. By 611 AA (3183 TS), the town is commonly known as Entilla which is a slack pronunciation of Yen Taell. As a result of this the actual island is also often referred to as Entilla Hin.

As Entilla grows there is an increasing pressure to start trade relations with the peoples of Aryiure, as supplies coming from the Paleyans last shorter with each boat arriving. As a result many start to try and establish contacts in Riskalyer in order to import grown food in exchange for fish. Further Capilis is introduced in Riskalyer in exchange for all kinds of goods. This angers Salanian authorities, but there is little they can do to prevent it.

In 613 AA (3185 TS) Aethans once again start practising piracy around Aryiure and manage. The reasons for that is an increase of traffic from Grinorea Hin once again and that the other cultures were increasingly hostile against Aethans which made many feel that they needed to be taught a few lessons. Famous pirates such as Gekare Blindeye and Geslem returned to Entilla Hin at several occasions in the coming years. The piracy didn't result in any direct attack to a settlement, but once a foreign vessel dared to leave harbour it was generally brought down. Much of the crew aboard these vessels was taken as slaves and eventually shipped off to the Paleyans. This practise essentially never ends, but has periods when it is more or less common.

While in the swamp of the Drulons in 615 AA (3187 TS) a few adventuring Aethans lead by Nemel Deltmer, were shown hospitality by a Sompa who introduced them to a variety of poisons and mind-stimulating drugs traditionally used by the Drulons. As the supply of capilis for the many Aethans who now lived on Entilla Hin was a bit low, Nemel saw great opportunity in this. But as the gang had no efficient way of communicating with the Drulons they merely managed to anger them and were forced away with incomprehensible threats and raised weapons. But Nemel and his friends were not so easily scared and remain persistent in their attempts to visit the Sompa again. Eventually they succeed and many follow in their steps. Though most Drulons are irritated by their presence, the Sompas do not seem to mind it.

618 AA (3190 TS) a few members of the mining company Cemes led by Trenil Cemes, come to inspect for mineral findings on Entilla Hin. As they did not expect to find anything they are rather surprised to find that the inner parts of the island holds iron, copper, silver and even some gold. It is not enough for Cemes to consider it worthwhile to start mining there, but rumours of the findings quickly spread among the inhabitants of the island.

619 AA (3191 TS) a raid is made against a Taran clan in order to capture slaves for the purpose of mining. Due to the fact that the Tarans are not united the incident does not stir up a larger crisis. A few of the slaves soon escape but some remain and the metals they find become a valuable resource of high trading value for the residents of Entilla.

The northern lights seen in 622 AA (3194 TS) are not interpreted in any particular way by most of the Aethans in Yen Taell. There were the odd few who interpreted it as a manifestation of Chali or as the coming of a great storm, but most didn't think twice of it.

In 623 AA (3195 TS) there is still a clear lack of leadership in Yen Taell. Law and order doesn't work much different from Grinorea Hin, even though the environment is less violent than there. It's at this time that two women who claim to be astrologers arrive from the Paleyans and seem interested in what the northern lights looked like in Aryiure, as the lights were not quite seen as clearly home in Aetha. But after some time it becomes evident that their motives were quite different. They pay close attention to the Religions of the cultures of Aryiure's natives and then explain how similar these religions are to the Aethan religion and to the Coechian religion. They claim this to be evidence that the Teachings of Aetha should not be representative to the beliefs of the people coming from the Paleyans at all. Further they present themselves as Siasha and Lenora Priestesses of Peckutung, the most prominent of gods worshiped in the Paleyans before Aetha's false gods began to be worshiped. They ask the populace of Entilla to embrace Peckutung and to dismiss the lies and corruption that the brotherhood of Chali imposes on people's minds. In Yen Taell there were no priests of Chali and thus no reason to abide by their lies.

Many are baffled and confused by these priestesses and the few religious inhabitants of Entilla grow angry and call them minions of Neasa, guilty of the blasphemy that they accuse the brotherhood of. An angry mob chases them and captures Siasha, though Lenora escapes mysteriously disappears never to be seen on the island again. Siasha is spared and allowed to continue living on the island as she promises not to spout her beliefs any more and claims to have been under a curse.

In 624 AA (3196 TS) a priest of Chali arrives to Yen Taell searching for Siasha, but a few locals hide her at an unknown location and eventually he leaves. It's also this year that civil conflicts haunt the Paleyans and for the first time a kassat vessel arrive in Yen Taell searching for Aeth the Sea-weasel, but it is claimed he has not been there for several years so they soon leave again. Many Aethans actually leave the region for the Paleyans during this period, but the one's who remain begin to establish better relations with the other cultures. Trade with the Salanians through Riskalyer and with the Sakoians through Sakril becomes more and more extensive. Many trips are also made to Caeril in order to trade goods with the other cultures. The Drulons still remain hostile though many attempts to trade with them are made. Many have noted that the Drulons value sharkskin and many Aethans start to hunt sharks in order to gain access to the dyes and poisons of the swamp. But the lack of sharks makes this a difficult practise. Otherwise fishing is by the far the most common practise among the Aethans at Yen Taell. The water is rich in fish and the nearby reef holds a marine life that isn't found anywhere else near Aryiure. The battles between Salanians and the now united Tarians that ravages Aryiure, does not affect Yen Taell much as the battle never reaches any seaport.

The next year 625 AA (3197 TS) becomes a year with a great influx of new people to Yen Taell. The reason for that is that the House of Medana has decided to make an effort to gain a complete control of Aethan trade near Aryiure. One of the first who arrive is Yankris Paedlo who instantly journeyed to Sakril with his former slave Lafatiya in order for her to finally come home, only to be discouraged by the fact that her village had been burnt down a few years back. Feeling lost she decides to come with him to Yen Taell and help him organise the ferry service between Entilla and Sakril which he had been assigned to start up.

Later in the year many more prominent people employed by Medana arrive. Among these are Raldus Fey and Salena Menan who are assigned to beautify the architecture of Entilla, which up until then only consisted of wooden dwellings of varying quality. The island has a certain amount of usable limestone, which is used to start building a few more extravagant buildings. Worth to mention is also Lenard Medana, Kaina Desai and Kuil Ranes, who temporarily settle in Riskalyer, Laffrane and Danilyn Cove respectively in order to aid Sala recover from the recent battles.

The early citizens of Entilla generally accept the leadership of the new arrivals as many were tired of the anarchy that earlier flourished.

The following two years see a steady improvement of living conditions. The leading merchant of Medana, Dalmer Medana makes a visit to Yen Taell in 626 AA (3198 TS) year and appoints Yankris Paedlo as Gemila-man of Entilla. Dalmer is also the first to report that Croilin IV has been murdered and that Aeth the Sea-weasel turned out to be his son and is now the new ruler of Aetha. Later in the year it is reported that Dalmer died and was replaced by his young son Nemev Medana. This change in Medana's leadership does affect Yen Taell slightly as the amount of ships coming in from the Paleyans seem to be less and a few leave for the Paleyans this year.

627 AA (3199 TS) is a frightful year as a storm starts to form around a whirlpool known as Caebrylla located not too far South west of Aryiure. The storms quickly grow in power and last do not seem to end. It is not until the storms have lasted a few weeks that people truly start to worry and rumours start going that they will never end. Slaves on the island who are natives to Aryiure start bringing up stories of century-long storms that once haunted the island. Many Aethans panic as they realize that they may be trapped and a ship captained by the slightly crazed man Derdos Keyan attempts to penetrate the storm, but the ship is wrecked and both he and most of his crew go down with it. After that nobody else has tried to get through the storms, even though they block the path back to the Paleyans and as result, no communication with the rest of Aetha has been happening in the last year.

As the year 628 AA (3200 TS) starts the storms have yet to end and many have come to accept the fact that they never will. It's a hard fact to face, even for those who had not planned on leaving Aryiure, but everyone learns to cope with it somehow. Many of those who spent most of their time at sea turn to alcohol or capilis and try to fill their lives with pleasure in order to keep boredom away. Surprisingly few have turned to religion for comfort, but some do and often pray for the storms to end. Others force themselves to try and make better contact with the other cultures, realising that in order to survive; they must try to adopt.

The storms seem to affect the rest of Aryiure very little. Having lived in isolation for so long the natives of Aryiure do not feel cut off from the outside, in the same manner Aethans do. Instead of being depressed, other events make many of them feel more contempt now, than in the past. Many Tarians though their last battle was lost are happy with being united under their new leader; the Sakoians have also found a new leader after going through a long period of anarchy and corruption. Even the Drulons seem more open now that they once were. But many hold bloodlust against the Salanians and a new war may be coming in Aryiure. There are Aethans who speculate of getting involved in this conflict if it evolves; though most want none of it.
